Corner Sinks

One of the biggest trends in space saving bathroom design to hit the market in recent years is the influx of the corner shower unit. While corner showers have always been an option for bathroom design, their overwhelming revival of sorts seems to have been fueled partly by the large percentage of consumers who have chosen to renovate older homes instead of purchasing or building new ones. Since priorities have changed over time, bathrooms in older homes were typically much smaller than those we have today. The corner shower allowed a significant space saving as well as a stylish visual appeal. Following the rising trends centered around corner showers, manufacturers have taken the next step in space saving designs with the influx of corner sinks now hitting the marketplace.

Where Can Corner Sinks Be Used?

Unlike the space saving design of a corner shower which is restricted to the bathroom, the corner sink can be utilized in a much larger number of rooms, including the kitchen and bar. The most popular model, however, is still the corner bathroom sink.

Corner Bathroom Sinks In Older Homes

Corner bathroom sinks are ideal for small spaces such as older bathrooms that were typically built with limited square footage. Older homes tended to focus the available space on the kitchen and the bedrooms. This was due in a large part to the fact that even smaller houses were designed to be able to accommodate large families. Bedrooms, aside from the master room, were often shared among two or more siblings and the kitchen needed to be large enough to handle the preparation of substantially sized meals. While the bathroom was still a vital piece of the home, families were also used to sharing a single bathroom between multiple people and, therefore, the size was not necessarily important. As housing prices continued to soar, more and more homeowners were choosing older homes to renovate and refurbish. The corner bath sink allowed them an additional space saving fixture that helped to maximize the efficiency of the limited square footage in the bathroom.

Corner Bath Sinks In Powder Rooms

Corner bath sinks are also ideal for guest bathrooms in older or even newer homes. Sometimes referred to as powder rooms or half bathrooms, a guest bathroom is designed to accommodate visitors who may require the use of a toilet and sink, but not necessarily a shower or bath unit. These bathrooms are typically very small as they are often situated off of larger rooms in the house, such as living rooms or dens. They are also intended to be used on a rather infrequent basis and therefore, a large space is not required. These powder rooms are also very common in multi story houses. While most two or three story houses have the bedrooms and full bathrooms on the upper floors, the powder room on the lower floor allowed the homes residents and guests the ability to use the facilities without having to ascend to the second or third floor. Since storage is not necessarily a primary concern in half bathrooms, pedestal corner sinks tend to be the most popular choice for these areas.

Corner Kitchen Sinks

Corner kitchen sinks have also become a popular design on the market. These two are ideal for certain older homes containing only one or two bedrooms that did not necessarily merit the need for a larger kitchen space. In order to save room, the kitchen sink can be corner mounted to allow maximum efficiency of the counter space. In most kitchens, the sink is placed somewhere in the middle of the longest counter area. In a smaller kitchen, the use of a corner kitchen sink allows the counter area to remain undivided, offering a larger food preparation area.

Corner Bar Sinks

In larger homes that have a designated bar area, either indoors or out, a corner sink is the best way to utilize the smaller area it is needed in. Since the sink is typically only used for washing glasses or smaller plates and utensils, there is really no need for a full sized sink. The small corner sinks used for this purpose offer the benefit of a fully functioning washing area while also being small enough to not take up a substantial amount of unneeded space. The small corner sinks can be used indoors for entertaining styled bars, or outdoors for poolside bars or designated BBQ areas. Particularly in warmer climates where outdoor pools are bountiful, many homeowners find the convenience of a outdoor ‘kitchen’ designed primarily for beverages and snack preparation a must have for outdoor entertaining.
