While sliding frameless shower door systems are common for traditional bathtub fixtures, many modern bathrooms are being designed with walk-in showers instead of tubs. For consumers who still wish to have the frameless look, but have a walk-in shower, frameless bypass shower doors are the perfect solution.
What is a Frameless Bypass Shower Door System?
Traditional sliding shower doors run on a track mounted on the rim of the bathtub and connect to a support bar just below the ceiling. If the bathroom is designed with a walk-in shower in addition to, or in place of, a bathtub, the frameless system would be mounted to the top surface of the shower tray and connected at the top to either a support system just below the ceiling or, in some cases, run directly to the ceiling itself. Instead of having a sliding door, the bypass system has a swinging door that opens outward.
How is the System Designed?
Most walk-in showers will typically have two sides created by the tiled walls of the bathroom itself and two exposed sides. In a bypass system, one of the two exposed sides would be fitted with a fixed glass panel secured to the shower tray at the bottom and the header bar or ceiling on top. The second exposed side would contain another fixed panel that would resemble a standard door frame. The bypass door would be cut from this panel and have a handle mounted directly onto it. The bypass door is designed with a silicone edging along its sides that creates a watertight seal once the door has been closed. Some showers can also be designed as corner units with triangular shapes that have only one exposed side. With custom frameless shower systems, the shower could be essentially be any shape with multiple exposed sides. In either case, each exposed side would have a fixed glass panel, with one exposed side containing the door assembly.
Frameless bypass shower door systems are the ideal choice for walk-in showers. It not only gives them a very sleek appearance with clean lines, but also provides a unique focal point for your new or redesigned bathroom.
