Shower Surround Kits

Shower kits are a top seller when it comes to bathroom remodeling items. They are not only affordable, they are simple to install. While they may have had a somewhat cheap and flimsy design and appearance in the past, the growing demand for shower surround kits on the market have given manufacturers the ability to take them to the next level of beauty and quality.

What Are Shower Surround Kits?

Shower surround kits, sometimes referred to as simply shower kits, are a prepackaged set of components needed to install a corner shower unit in your bathroom. These packaged units include all the basic pieces, including a shower tray, shower stall, shower enclosure, and, if applicable, a shower door.

Shower Tray

A shower tray, also known as a shower base or pan, is the bottom portion of the shower that rests on the bathroom floor. The tray includes the shower drain and is typically made from acrylic or fiberglass. For acrylic trays, a sturdier backing is sometimes needed to increase the weight bearing capability of the tray. Some bases also come unfinished, allowing for the application of tile onto the pre-molded base for additional customization options. The base not only serves as the shower floor, it also prevents water from passing through to the floor as well as flowing out of the shower unit. They are pre-cut to hold the shower drain.

Shower Stall

A shower stall, one of the two components that make up the shower surround, is the section of the shower kit where the shower meets with the bathroom walls. While traditional bathtub and shower combinations typically have tiled walls, the solid panel construction of the surrounds included with shower kits allow for a much easier installation, longer lifespan, and less cleaning effort. Shower stalls usually come pre cut with holes to accommodate the shower head as well as the water controls.

Shower Enclosure & Door

The final piece of the shower kit is the enclosure, the second part of the overall shower surround. The enclosure encompasses the sides of the shower unit not flush against the bathroom walls. Enclosures are often made from either plastic or glass and also house the door of the shower unit. There are several types of doors, designed to suit any size bathroom or personal preference. The enclosures themselves can come in array of color tints, transparent designs for maximizing the room’s appearance, frosted designs for added privacy, or even etched designs for a more artistic look.
