There are many facets of home decorating and home fixtures that take their inspiration from more industrial applications. Often certain fixtures in more industrial settings are designed to withstand heavy use, be space efficient, and remain affordable because of the quantity in which they usually need to be purchased. Within this industrial inspired residential trend, bathroom sinks are no exception. A bathroom in a retail, industrial, or office setting needs to handle a significantly higher volume of use than a home bathroom. Because of this, the sinks must not only be able to withstand a substantial higher level of wear and tear, they must also be able to be installed as multiple units in a single space. Using this space saving design and increased strength, manufacturers have created a group of square bathroom sinks that take a certain amount on inspiration from their industrial counterparts.
Why Are Square Bathroom Sinks So Different?
The obvious answer that explains the difference between a square bathroom sink and a more traditional one is the shape of the unit itself. The majority of standard bathroom sinks tends to be either round or oval in design. This traditional shape seems to have been carried over from the first origins of the sink that consisted of a stone that had been hollowed out into a concave design by elements such as water and wind. The basin shaped served its purpose well enough over time that it still remains common today. A square sink, however, can present many benefits over a typical rounded design.
Why Are They So Visually Appealing?
The most obvious benefit of a square sink is its visual appeal. With a growing push towards creating modern bathrooms, curves and flowing lines tend not be blend as well. A square sink, on the other hand, offers the visually lines, sleek and straight, that a modern bathroom works best with. They also create a more symmetrical appearance regardless of what type of sink is being used. The square shape can be used in a variety of styles, including vessel sinks, vanity sinks, and under mount sinks. It is also extremely common among wall mount sinks, primarily due to its ability to rest flush against the back wall, a necessity for this particular design.
What Space Saving Features Do They Offer?
A rounded sink, especially when mounted into a bathroom counter, tends to create a certain amount of dead space on the counter itself. The areas immediately surrounding the curves of the sink are very hard to utilize. A square sink, on the other hand, allows full use of the surrounding counter, due to the straight edges it is bordered by.
