Submersible Sewage Pumps

Submersible sewage pumps can be used for a wide range of applications including home aquarium filters all the way to massive oil well filters. With both residential, commercial, and industrial applications, they are perhaps one of the most common types of sewage pumps in use today. The primary function of a submersible sewage pump is to work against gravity to move waste materials from lower ground to the main sewer or septic lines above them.

A submersible sewage pump is situated at the bottom of the waste collection basin which itself is located beneath the area that requires drainage. The system then uses an intake valve, situated as close to the bottom of the pump as possible, to take in the waste materials and liquids that need processing. Once the material enters the pump, the power of the pump motor creates enough pressure to force the material up and out of the basin towards the main sewer line which is closer to ground level.

The motor of the pump itself is contained in an airtight chamber within the basin. This keeps waste matter and liquids from getting into the motor and only allows material to enter through the inlet valve and exit through main output pipe leading to the surface. The primary difference between submersible sewage pumps and other models is that, because of the fact that they are completely surrounded by the waste material, they aren’t required to run on a continuous basis. The pump has a built-in float that turns on the power when the waste material rises above a certain level. Once the pump has processed enough of the waste to drop the float back down to another pre-determined spot, the power shuts off and the unit remains idle.

Submersible sewage pumps are able to process some solid matter, but work best with liquid and slurry, a mud like mix of liquid and solid wastes. Industrial and commercial models are designed to handle larger volumes and sizes of waste, while residential units are not nearly as powerful in their processing capabilities.
