Understanding Replacement Toilet Parts

For all the self-proclaimed handymen and women out there, you all know that finding replacement toilet parts is not always a pleasant experience. While one would think that all toilet parts are created equal, even parts tagged as ‘universal’ never seem to be the proper fit. There are essentially two main toilet parts that can be replaced fairly simply without professional intervention.

Flapper Valve

The flapper valve is the most common replacement toilet part on the market, and also one of the hardest to find the proper model of. The flapper valve is the component that sits at the bottom of the tank and lifts when the handle is flushed to allow the water in the tank to drain into the bowl. They are often made of plastic or rubber and can wear out rather quickly, especially if toilet bowl cleaners are used within the tank itself. Since nearly every model of toilet has a slightly different sized flapper valve, it can be very tricky to find a replacement with the right fit. The best thing to do is take the old part with you to the home improvement store and have their educated staff assist you.

Float System

The float system is what controls when the water in the tank fills up and, subsequently, shuts off. Once the float drops to a certain level within the tank, the water valve begins to refill the tank. When the float reaches a certain height, the water flow shuts off. If the float is not functioning properly, the toilet will either run continuously or not refill properly. Like the flapper valve, float systems are rather different between brand names and models. Since the part is easily removed, it is also recommended you take it with you when shopping for a replacement to ensure the correct type and model are used.

If you are having issues with your toilet, it is most likely a malfunction in one of these two parts that is causing it. Once you have been able to find the correct replacement toilet parts, the repair will seem rather simple in comparison.
