One of the main focal points of any home is its kitchen. No other room in the house is as heavily relied upon as the kitchen for providing sustenance. Because this room is such a central gathering point in every home, having a visually appealing kitchen is often just as important as having a functional one. While kitchen appliances come in a variety of colors and finishes, as do kitchen counter and cabinets, there are, by design, fairly consistent. The kitchen sink, however, has begun to take on a rather unique personality in recent years, borrowing from influences of the past as well as string for the visual representation of the future. As sinks progress, so do the faucets that make them functional. One of the hottest trends right now in kitchen design, in fact, is the rising popularity of wall mount kitchen faucets.

What Is A Wall Mounted Kitchen Faucet?

Wall mounted kitchen faucets are, as the name implies, a kitchen faucet that is mounted on the rear wall behind the sink or rear upright lip of the sink, as opposed to being run through the counter top or rear flat lip of the sink. With traditional faucets, the plumbing lines are run through the rear section of the sink and into the cabinetry below, where they are then joined to the water supply. In a wall mounted sink, however, the lines are run in the wall itself and joined without the need for cabinet space to house the plumbing lines. There is typically an access panel built into the wall where the faucet lines connect to the main water line, making access for repair or maintenance much easier.

Where Did The Design Originate?

Wall mount kitchen faucets are believe to have peaked in popularity around the same time farmhouse sinks became commonplace. Designed to be much larger than a standard kitchen sink, the farmhouse sink was able to accommodate the demands created by large farming families as well as the increased size of the cookware that was popular at the time. Since the cookware was typically made from cast iron, the sinks were also subject to a great amount of ‘abuse’. Because of this, they were replaced much more frequently than a standard sink would have been. In order to make the process of replacement easier, faucets were mounted on the wall behind the sink instead of being mounted into it. This allowed the sink to be swapped out without the need to remove and then reinstall the faucet component.

What Are The Benefits Of Wall Mount Kitchen Sink Faucets?

Wall mount faucets, while long popular in bathroom design, are quickly becoming a visual focal point in kitchens as well. The design of the wall mount unit is very unique in appearance, immediately drawing attention and creating a statement with regards to design and décor. With the increasing number of sink designs on the market as well, the wall mount sink offers homeowners the opportunity to pair their unique sinks with something other than a standard faucet. A wall mount kitchen faucet is extremely versatile and able to easily convey either a vintage or rustic appearance or an ultra modern look, all dependent of the material, finish, and design involved. Another trend that is gaining on the vintage inspired design front is the return of raised back sinks. Instead of laying flush across the top, these unique sinks have a vertical portion on their rear side. A wall mount faucet is designed to mount perfectly into the rear section.

Aside from the aesthetic appeal, the wall mount kitchen sink faucets also serves several functional purposes. Just as the increasing demand for vessel sinks increased in bathrooms, influencing the need for wall mounted lavatory faucets, the return in popularity of the farmhouse sink in kitchens has created the same need. While the materials being used to make sinks today don’t require the frequent replacement that older farmhouse sinks did, the design of the farmhouse sink itself still benefits from a wall mounted faucet. Since the standard farmhouse sink is much larger from front to back than a standard sink, less counter space is available to be able to mount a faucet into. Wall mount faucets eliminate the need for the extra counter space, making the increased size less restricting.

Wall mount faucets can also make cleaning much simpler, eliminating the need to try and keep tight spaces behind and around counter mounter faucets clean. By raising the faucet mounting p onto the wall, the area surrounding the fixture is much easier to keep clean. The relocation of the plumbing lines from the cabinet under the sink into the wall behind it also helps to free up a significant amount of usable storage space which, as we all know, is extremely important in kitchens.
